There are many reasons why the south didn't industrialize. Some argue that startup capital was scarce, or that it was against the southern identity to invest in factories rather than art and culture. Both of these could be true, however, the most notable factor for the non-industrialization of the South was the lack of air conditioning (cooling).
People don't realize how hot it can get without air conditioning. Working with textiles (The primary industry of the day) would be especially hot. The assumed use of slave labor during that period would be ineffective because of the high temperatures. (Any labor would have to be slowed due to health reasons)
