There are two parts to the answer. The first is that Hitler was very popular in Germany WITH THE GERMANS. He had bought Germany out of a crippling depression with massive unemployment after WWI and rebuilt them into a country with some pride and a few jobs, although you might want to Google on Jesse Owens' Berlin Olympics and Hitler, but that's an aside. Certainly, people in England knew that Hitler had rebuilt a capable war machine in direct opposition to the terms that Germany signed to end WWI, but there was a peculiar feeling in Europe that Germany had been treated very harshly by the terms, and maybe Germany had the right to try to take back some of the land that had been taken away from them in 1918. The fact that the land they wanted back was in the heart of their most industrial area and vital for producing war materials. Hitler was apparently very charming and plausible when he wanted to be, and he certainly fooled the British prime minister Ramsey MacDonald with his signature on a piece of paper. And it was a different time. Fact is, there was a very serious attempt to kill Hitler late in the war and by his own Generals in his own house high in the mountains. The Generals realized that without Hitler's inept meddling and total oversight of all operational decisions, they still were in a position to win the war. So at a meeting, one or more of them carried a bomb in a briefcase. The bomb blew, but apparently Hitler was saved by the thickness and weight of the mahogany table. Most of the generals were not so lucky. Those who escaped the blast were hanged by Hitler.
