The United States of America is a very large country, consisting of 50 states, many of which are large enough to be large countries in themselves, if they were not part of the USA. Because different regions have different climates, resources, histories, and traditions, naturally they develop their own ways of life. America is united by common purposes which were first presented in the Declaration of Independence. Americans want to have a country in which they have the opportunity to achieve a high standard of living (which is often called "the American Dream") and to be secure from the kinds of political and economic turmoil from which many other countries suffer. While these goals are not always achieved, Americans are still willing to try to achieve them, and that is what unites Americans.
