The quality of the Breyer horses are superior to many other brands of collectable model horses. There are actually horses shows where you compete with your Breyer horses. Some of them can be worth quite a bit of money.
I mean, I agree, they can get REALLY expensive. What was $30 last year is now $45 too, thanks to inflation. However, Barbie horses are like $15 for a horse, and Breyers range from $20-$50. And if you look at the horse, you see every muscle line, every vein, and every strand of mane. Some are even textured. But while the cheaper Barbie horses are cheaper, the Breyer ones have a lot more detail, have a higher quality, and are collectible, not toys.
Breyers cost about $50 USD, so approximately 32 pounds.
Breyer horses were first made in the 1950's, so Breyer has been going on for about 58 years, which is completely crazy, but it's cool to think that people have been inspired by them.
Breyer Horses are extremely detailed and realistic model horses made out of a combination of plastic and resin material. Breyer has been producing model horses since 1950, so about 50 years! Breyer has hundreds of models, in different sizes and molds. Each one is hand carved and hand painted, giving it a value of about $50, depending on the size. There are Traditionals (1:9 scale), Classics (1:12 scale), Paddock Pals, Stablemates, and Mini Whinnies. However, it is impossible to thoroughly describe all the features Breyer horses offer in this answer. To find out more, see the related links section below to go to Breyer's website!

Absolutely! There is no age limit for equine admirers and nothing to be ashamed of. In fact many people, young and older, would rather have a Breyer collection than a live horse that needs food, care and much time. So collect your horses and have fun.
The hole is a "breathing hole" of sorts. Breyer does this so that air does not expand or contract within the model due to heat and cause damage to it. http://www.breyerhorses.com/faq/#Q13
In paper, bubble wrapping, tissue, cardboard, anything you have handy.
In 1950, a Western horse was set on a base with a clock. It was popular, and so more models were made, and Breyer Animal Creations was born! Originally based out of IL, it is now owned by Reeves International, and located in NJ.
