Well first of all.. You want heat in your house when it's cold, RIGHT? So you turn on the heater with the knob.. and the heat comes out of the vents. No vents = explosion. And basically.. no vents as I said.. explosion, because the gas has nowhere to go so the pressure will build up and BOOM.. flames.
Yes, any smell of gas is an indication of a leak and should be repaired.
Fuel Leak. Possibly the Fuel Pump. Get it checked immediately.
If it's a gas heater it could be a gas leak. It is probably best to get it checked out. the first few times i use the heat-it smells-the dust in the duct system is pulling into furnace , and burning...goes away. can you describe the smell .. is it gas, forced hot air( vents / ducts ) or hot water and radiators- not likely- this info. are nedded to answer accurately...
Check and see if your fireplace has heat vents on the sides or above the firebox, and that they are open.
In additional to radiating heat into the room many gas fireplaces have a heat exchanger- cool air is drawn into the shell around the firebox, and warmed air comes out of the vents at the top.
You might have a gas leak in your front engine compartment. The heater pull in air from the front and therefore if you got a gas leak it will pull the smell in get it check asap.
Is it gas or Freon that you are smelling?
Magma or lava vents and gas vents. Also fumarole.
