Why should they not? Lord Ganesha is considered the son of a major God of Hinduism (Shiva) and a major Goddess of Hinduism (Parvati, the universal mother). Ganesha is supposed to be the God with whose help obstacles can be overcome. He is the God of auspiciousness. All rituals, travels, enterprises, new years, begin with his invocation. His wives are supposed to be Riddhi (Prosperity) and Siddhi (Fulfillment). Actually, the worship of Lord Ganesha is growing very fast in India even in regions where he was not the main God. So what, if he is fat and has an elephants head? He is absolutely lovely to Hindu eyes.
