Honey bees do not hibernate in the winter, but they are unable to fly out of the hive because it is too cold. They collect and store honey during the rest of the year so they have stocks of food to see them through the winter.

Luckily for us, they store more honey than they need, and this surplus is what the beekeeper will take.

queen dont make honey the drones do Actually, the drone bee is male and it's main function is to be ready to fertilize a receptive queen. The worker bee is female but lacks the ability to reproduce. Worker bees do everything but lay eggs and mate. They build the comb from wax they produce, as well as clean, defend, and repair the hive. They feed the larva, the queen, and the drones. They gather nectar, pollen and water. They ventilate, cool & heat the hive to keep the temperature the proper temperature. The job of the queen bee is to lay eggs. A queen can lay 3,000 eggs in a single day. But the reason why bees make honey is because they need food for the hive during the winter when flowers aren't blooming. No flowers... no nectar.... no food.
