It's more of a cultural thing. People generally imagine something absurd, then later create it physically (for example - voice activated rooms were common in sci-fi, but were not predicted to exist for another century or so). Such inventions are created because of such a dream. One significant piece of Japanese culture is anime. A common theme in anime is what are called "Gundams" which are humanoid weapons (Transformers was began this way aswell).
It may also be important to note that all modernized nations create robots, but rather the Japanese create less "useful," but scientifically advanced robots which act moreso as a humanoid.
It's difficult to link something like this due to it sounding stereotypical. Why do North Americans eat Hot Dogs? Thats absurd in most places in the world and is regarded as one of the most disgusting foods (A survey done by MSN actually found it rated more disgusting than cats/dogs - keep in mind that this survey was done through multiple nations rather than just NA). There is no direct link between North Americans specifically with Hot Dogs, but moreso became common through cultural influence.
