Just an educated guess here, but Mexico was conquered and colonized in the 16th Century by a relatively small group of Spaniards, and it may be that the native population of Mexico adopted these last names when they converted to Catholicism.

∙ 14y agoThey don't. They have two last names (the last name of the father plus the last name of the mother). They appear to have a lot of names when some parents give their children complex names or two or more first names. For example:
Luis Hernandez and Ana Sanchez have a girl, and name her Maria del Pilar, which is a complex first name. The child's name would be "Maria del Pilar Hernandez Sanchez".
Then the same parents have one son and name him Juan Antonio. His name would be "Juan Antonio Hernandez Sanchez".
Finally, they have a third child, and name her Ana. Her name would be "Ana Hernandez Sanchez", or Ana Hernandez for short.
