The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" church) does support gay people but does not support gay marriage. The Church welcomes gay men and women and openly gay members are welcome to have near full participation in all aspects of church life (They can be ordained, preach, and participate or officiate in all sacred ordinances, but they cannot be Bishops or youth leaders). The church teaches that it is not a sin to have homosexual thoughts, feelings, inclinations, or temptations; however, it is sinful to give in to the temptation and have a sexual relationship with a member of the same sex. Those Mormons who do participate in sexual relationships or even a marriage with those of the same gender are still welcome to attend services and participate in activities like a regular member off the congregation, but may not preach or hold a position within the church until they repent and confess their sin to a Bishop. Gay baptismal candidates are expected to remain celibate for a certain period of time before being considered.
The Church does not support the legalization of gay marriage, although it does support and advocate equality protections in housing, employment, hospital visitation, etc. While the Church itself does not support or participate in gay marriages, the feelings of many members are mixed. Some support gay marriages being recognized federally, so long as protections are in place for dissenting religious organizations. Others are against it completely, and others are open to it completely. The Church has also donated to efforts to provide food and shelter for the homeless LGBT community.
