most Muslims have not read the book, the main protest is not because of reference to the so called satanic verses in the koran { debated for centuries}
some moslem reviews argue, that on a few occasions in the book, the prophet is insulted by rushdie, eg. at the brothel , with a married women, at the fairground.
a read of the parts mentioned will convince you that rushdie does not insult the prothet at all and in fact is very courteous to the prophet.
