As a form of National dress and pride in the history of their country, it also identifies clans in modern times. Descendants from North America have fuelled much of the growth in the Scottish Tartan industry. However originally tartan and the Kilt it was made into was only worn in the Highlands not the Lowlands. Tartans historically were not related specifically to a clan but to an area. The use of it as a National dress developed in the early 19th century helped by writers such as Sir Walter Scott and the visit of the King in 1822 where a pageant had him wearing Tartan. Previously it had been identified with the Jacobite cause to such an extent it was banned from 1747 to 1782 (although clans had fought on both sides at Culloden). Plaid is fabric woven into a pattern called a tartan, and tartans pertain to specific family groups called clans. In Scotland, people wear tartans to show kinship with, or to honor a clan. The identification of specific tartans to Highland clans only occurred at the beginning of the 19th century following a romantic revival. Prior to this tartan was produced in a region and worn by anyone in the locality whatever their clan and some of them were just numbered. They are generally only worn on formal occasions.
