In 2007, the average American (over 18 years old) carried four (4) credit cards and one in seven (7) carried ten (10) credit cards.

The increase in credit cards amongst adults be a result of the following circumstances:

* Low cost of money/cost to borrow in the US from 2002-2007 increased credit card use through balance transfer offers

* Lax underwriting standards by issuing banks provided credit cards to individuals that did not understand the product and/or were not qualified to hold the product

* Wealth effect of rising stock marketand home prices made people tap investments and home equity lines to fund consumerism using credit cards

* Limited anti-junk mail laws allowed billions of pre-screened and pre-approved offers to be sent to prospective card holders

* Evolution of cash back and rewards programs drove people to acquire new cards that "paid them back."

Is it true when you apply for a lot if credit cards it makes you look bad?

Yes, it can do. A lender might firstly be suspicious as to why you need so many cards. Secondly, if you keep applying does it mean that you have been turned down? If so, why? Further, if you have many cards then the amount you could borrow on all cards together (your credit limit) is going up and lenders might be uneasy with the amount of credit you have in total.

How many credit cards can I have open in my name at one time Is it bad to have a lot?

it's a good idea to have as few open at a time as possible. Having too many credit cards open at once will ruin your credit score. You're not going to have to pay anything for the credit cards unless you use them, so in that sense, it doesn't matter how many you have. However, opening too many will drop your credit score significantly, so it's not a good idea to have a bunch open at the same time.
