Why do airplane passengers in emergency situations often have to be told to begin breathing in pressurized oxygen?

Commercial airliners are pressurized for high altitude flight; in an emergency where the aircraft loses cabin pressure, oxygen masks are deployed so that passengers can breathe normally in the low cabin pressure until the aircraft makes an emergency landing.
The oxygen masks may also drop during extremly rough landings or severe turbulence, this is because the panel may become loose.
