If the guy really likes the girl as a friend, even though he does like her as more, he doesn't want them to break up and be awkward, not friends anymore. I mean, if you dated your best friend, if he was a guy, and you broke up, how would it be around him afterward, depending on how you broke up? So, that's why. They just don't want it to be awkward after the break-up, if you do break up. That's why you shouldn't be friends with a guy before dating him.
