Because they sometimes revert to acting like kittens. Kittens often knead their mothers stomach while feeding. Presumably to stimulate the lactating glands of the mother cat. It may be comforting to adult cats to knead soft spongy materials, like blankets, thereby rekindling muscle and mental memories of feeding as a kitten. We have 3 adult cats and they all do this. Sometimes even on us!
It is an instinctive habit developed over several million years of dog evolution. The ancestors of modern dogs all bedded down for the night in tall grass where they were hidden. They first had to trample down the grass somewhat.
They remember kneading their mother's tummies to make the milk come out in a stronger flow into their mouths.
to sleep good
When they're kittens, they push their paws against their mother's belly to get the milk flowing. They basically knead their mother's belly like it's bread dough. Most cats continue to do this kneading -- they'll knead blankets, people, etc. -- for the rest of their lives. Even very old cats do it. Apparently it is some kind of regression behavior. So, when a cat is practicing making biscuits, I guess it means the cat is thinking about his/her mommy.
knead
The same as cats of any other coat pattern and color. They live in dense jungles of couches and blankets.
Whatever they are doing that to reminds them of their mother. They think that they will get milk when they do that. It's not just kittens, cats of all ages do it.
it means that the cat is happy or relaxed or has found something that feels good to knead!
