Cells must have a large surface area to volume ratio at all times. They cannot function without it. However, they are still constantly growing. So, as a result, they must replicate to retain that high surface area to volume ratio.

That is why growth of unicellular organisms is measured in the number of cells, and growth in multicellular organisms is measured in size.

It is called a clone cell. When a living thing makes an exact copy of itself it is called a clone. Hope this helps. BILLIE
