I'm not completely positive, but I think it goes like this:
Chihuahuas originated in Mexico (most people say this) mainly in the deserts. The deserts get really dark at night, and so, paired with their large ears for hearing, their large eyes take in more light and help to see (and eyes hear very very well) predators and enemies and possibly a late night snack (lol) in the dark better.
I personally have no idea if this is correct because I don't even own a Chihuahua, but I've researched a lot about them, but I haven't researched why their eyes are large. This is just a theory, but I hope I helped you :)
