They do not necessarily have greater luminosity, it depends on their size. Betelgeuse is cooler and brighter; a red dwarf is cooler and less bright.

Why can you see the stars when the sky is dark?

Because during the day - the Sun's luminosity is greater than the stars.

Does smaller mass stars have a greater luminosity than larger mass stars?

This is not necessarily true. most of the time stars with a larger diameter have more mass but some stars with a smaller diameter are more dense and have a greater mass. Find a main sequence star chart and you can compare the data.

What is the definition of a supergiant?

Any of various very large bright stars, such as Betelgeuse, having a luminosity that is thousands of times greater than that of our sun.

What is the size of the betelgeuse?

Betelgeuse boasts the diameter greater than the orbit of Jupiter. It has a mass of around 20 times the mass of the Sun, and its luminosity is almost 200,000 times greater than the Sun. So really, it is one of the biggest and brightest stars ever observed.

How can a cool star be more luminous than a hot star?

Luminosity is related to temperature and distance.A cool and thus less luminous star would be brighter than a more luminous star at a greater distance. Our Sun is a relatively cool star in comparison to say Rigel, but because it is closer it appears more luminous and brighter.

Are main sequence stars all alike in their luminosity and temperature?

No. Main sequence stars vary greatly in both temperature and luminosity. The least massive stars, red dwarfs, can have temperatures as low as 2,300 Kelvin and luminosity as low as 0.015% that of the sun. The most massive stars, which are blue in color can have temperatures as high as 50,000 Kelvin and may be hundreds of thousands times more luminous than the sun.

What star has a surface temperature 9000k and luminosity about 1 to 20 times greater than the sun?

Sirius

Which of the following stars has a surface temperature of approximately 9000 K and luminosity about 1 or 20 times greater than the Sun's luminosity?

Don't write "the following" if you don't provide a list - it doesn't make any sense.

What is the luminosity of the night sky. How much light do the stars produce relative to us compared to the sun?

The luminosity of stars varies quite a bit. Most stars (about 85-90% of them) emit less light than our Sun, while a few very massive stars emit, in extreme cases, over a million times as much light (or more precisely: total radiation) than our Sun.

If something is hotter and smaller does it give off a greater luminosity?

an increase in temperature or radius causes an increase in luminosity, assuming the other variable doesn't change. luminosity is the total energy output, rather than a measure of energy output against size.

How do star are more brighter than other stars?

Stars are more brighter than other stars because they have different characteristics that affect their luminosity. Luminosity is the amount of energy that a star emits per unit of time. It depends on the star's size, temperature, and distance from the observer. Some of the factors that make stars more brighter than other stars are: Size: Larger stars have more surface area and can emit more light than smaller stars. Temperature: Hotter stars have higher energy and can emit more light than cooler stars. Distance: Closer stars appear brighter than farther stars because their light has less space to travel and lose intensity.

What is the luminosity of an O-type star?

I read on Wikipedia that O-type stars can be a milllion times brighter than our Sun.
