Why do cooling fans only come on when you turn on AC on your Honda CR-V?

The CRV has a very efficient cooling system and the fans only come on as necessary to assist cooling. When you engage the A/C they usually kick on for a minute or two to maintain coolant temperature and will kick back off if they are not needed. So, if you are not overheating you probably don't have anything to worry about. If you are overheating you probably have a bad fan relay.

Are you asking about BOTH fans? One fan is the cooling system fan, located on the passengers side of the radiator, and the other is strictly the A/C cooling fan, located on the drivers side (operates ONLY when the A/C is activated). First, check the fuses or relays controlling these fans - after that it becomes a little more complicated. I do not believe that procedures for this troubleshooting are available free on-line, and the step-by-step instructions (in the Haynes Repair Manual) take up more than a page - are far too lengthy to go into here, and are copyrighted. Short of buying the manual you may have to get the vehicle to a mechanic.

The cooling fans are set to come on when the coolant reaches 224 degrees (low speed) and 240 degrees (high speed). If they do not turn on (without the AC) then either your coolant does not reach 224, or the switch that turns them on and off is bad. The switch should not be hard to replace, or too expensive. Since you mention that they do come on with the AC, then we know it's not the fans themselves.

I don't think you have a problem unless your temp gauge or light is coming on. The reason your fan comes on after you shut the car off is....... as you are driving and the car is running at operating temp, the air is flowing across the radiator cooling the coolant that circulates through the engine and radiator. When you stop, the water pump no longer circulates the coolant and you no longer have air flowing across the radiator fins cooling the coolant either. The electric fans are set to run off a relay, and when you stop, the fans come on to cool the coolant down until it cools to where the relay kicks off and the fans stop. However, the cooling fan should not come on each time you shut the vehicle off or if you're idling like mine did. If it does, you may need to replace your thermostat or you may have air in your system. Replacement of the thermostat is simple but be sure to buy the OEM from the dealership. My experience has been and the dealership has confirmed, that the aftermarket thermostats do not work well in these vehicles. My local dealership also advised that once the work on the cooling system is complete, they run the vehicle for no less than 1/2 hour with the radiator cap off. This allows air to escape the system. Since I have replaced the thermostat and "bled" the cooling system, my cooling fan only comes on during the hottest of weather.

One way is to disconnect the negative and the positive battery cables and then touch them together. This will clear the ECM. Next do the reset process. Start the bike and don't touch the throttle. Wait until the cooling fans turns on. When the fans turn, then turn bike off with the key only. Don't touch the throttle during warm-up.
