A cyclone - which is the Australian name for a hurricane - caused Cyclone Tracy. It actually began as a tropical depression in the Arafura Sea, north od Darwin. It developed into a small, but very intense tropical storm, which then developed cyclone status, passing right over Darwin on Christmas Eve 1974.

Cyclones are intense low pressure systems which begin rotating and form a central eye. Part of the reason for the high damage level was the unpredictable way that Tracy moved. It had been travelling south-west, but turned 90 degrees to the south-east and headed straight for Darwin, catching many people by surprise.

Cyclones develop over warm seas near the Equator. Air heated by the sun rises very swiftly, which creates areas of very low pressure. As the warm air rises, it becomes loaded with moisture which condenses into massive thunderclouds. Cool air rushes in to fill the void that is left, but because of the constant turning of the Earth on its axis, the air is bent inwards and then spirals upwards with great force. The swirling winds rotate faster and faster, forming a huge circle which can be up to 2,000 km across. In the middle of the storm is a calm, cloudless area called the eye, where there is no rain, and the winds are fairly light.

All tropical cyclones begin at the equator, an imaginary line that divides the Earth into the northern and southern hemispheres. The area at the equator receives the most concentrated sunlight. The heated land and the sea, as well as the condensation of the clouds will warm the surrounding air, resulting in the air rising. When the cold air flows into an area with warm air, wind is formed.

Tropical cyclones are formed due to the Coriolis Effect, where the spinning movement of the Earth will result in the winds to blow in a curved direction. Winds that are faster will curve more than slower winds. The Coriolis Effect results in cyclones being formed in the tropical areas and moving from the equator as it drifts away with the trade winds.

A cyclone's strength depends on the water's temperature. Warmer waters will result in stronger cyclones. At the centre of the storm is an area of low pressure at the water's surface, drawing in more air from the surroundings. The air rotates inwards, becomes warmer, and condenses into clouds, forming distinctive spiral bands called the eye wall, which is the strongest part of the cyclone and the winds are the fastest here. The thunderstorms will be joined together at their tops by rainclouds known as cirrostratus anvils. However, the weather within the eye remains clear and calm as the air sinking from above the storm's centre prevents clouds to grow there. Once a storm system reaches 119km, it will be classified as a tropical cyclone. A cyclone can travel for many kilometres each day. Each will remain strong as long as it travels over warm ocean water, and will weaken once it approaches land. Most cyclones last for an average of a week in the Australian region.
