I read that it's because it's in their genetic makeup. but I don't know for sure.

How much spots do Dalmatians have?

You can stand there for a long time trying to count the spots on
your dalmatian but I guarantee you'll have to search about 5
dalmatians before you find a match - if you can find one. I don't
think all dalmatians have the same amount of spots. I hope this
helps.
p.s - I don't suggest buying dalmatians to find out.

Are Dalmatian pups born white?

They are born white. Dalmatians have spots on their skin (and on
the roofs of their mouths which is adorable! They also have them on
their paw pads!). Before they get their spots, you can see their
spots when they are wet- especially right after being whelped. That
is how Dal breeders can immediatly tell how many puppies have black
spots and how many puppies have liver spots (liver is a rich dark
brown color. it isn't a rare color or new it is just the recessive
trait. most people don't know dalmatians can have liver spots
thanks to 101 Dalmatians!). Dalmatians get their spots around 3
weeks of age but they gradually get darker and more pigmented as
they age. 6 week old puppies will have significantly darker spots
than 3 week old puppies. Hope that helps!!! ~ A proud owner of 2
