The flash of the White Tail is a warning to other deer that danger is present. Deer will allso "snort" "wheeze" and stomp the ground. If a deer senses something is close but can not smell it or is unsure- it will snort or stomp the ground to get a response. The tail is a perfect sign- bright white can be seen from a long way in the forest.

White tailed deer use their tail to communicate with other deer. The tail up while eating simply lets the others in the group see them better. They don't always raise the tail when eating- especially if they are alone. The tail is used to signal danger to other deer and when frightened and running the tail is almost always raised.

I have watched them in groups for many hours and have observed them using their tails raised to different heights to signal different intentions. They also use their ears for the same reason.

A submissive or young doe will approach a dominate doe with her tail between her legs-ears flat back and front legs bent so far it looks like she is crawling.
