Grazing by large herbivores is a major factor determining the structure and species composition of upland ecosystems. The manipulation of grazing regimes by land managers can thus be a powerful tool in the management of upland habitats. To predict the effects of unmanaged, or managed, grazing at a particular site, an understanding is needed of the foraging behaviour, diet selection and intake of the large herbivore species found in the Scottish uplands.
Need area because of reproducing numbers , forage competition between grazing animals and the availability of forage for big game would increase . In other words its because of other grazing animals ( competition ) and because of the reproducing of the deer.
A horse can have as big area for grazing just don't make it too small. I keep my horses in about 1-2 acres and my horse is healthy.

That all depends on what species of deer you're referring to.

Shika means deer and maru means big. Basically, his name means big deer.
how big is the deer???
Horses mouths are possibly large because they are grazing animals. Grazing animals need biting teeth (incisors) to grab and cut the grass, and grinding teeth to grind this coarse material. You can't eat huge amounts of rough chewy fiber with a little mouth. Large animals that eat mainly grasses and other coarse plant foods need large mouths with strong jawbones, powerful muscles and large sturdy teeth to grind the food. Beside the horse, this group of large herbivores includes cattle, bison, llamas, camels, goats, sheep, antelopes, deer, elk, caribou, moose, buffalo, hippopotami and others. Grazing animals need to eat food in bulk because it is not a very concentrated form of energy, so being able to chew a good sized mouthful at a time would help. Grazing animals spend a lot of their time eating in order to get sufficient food.Grazing is also very hard on teeth so having more tooth grinding surface area would reduce the wear.
