It is probably best to start the answer by saying that the question makes an incorrect assumption. Good quality analogue signals are significantly better than many digital signals received in the home. The reason is that all domestic digital signals are heavily compressed using a "lossy" compression. This compression uses techniques that discard much of the signal byt does it in a way that is not normally noticed by viewers.

Having said that, it is rare that the analogue signal received in a home will be of the same quality that was originally broadcast. Transmission as a radio signal or via cable give rise to distortion and noise on the signal. Poor aerials on houses or poor cable connections in a house often contribute to quality loss. As noise and distortion increase on an analogue signal, so the image quality reduces and eventually can get drowned in white snow.

Although digital signals suffer the same degradation, as long as the receiver can sort out the high and low levels that make up a digital signal, the picture quality will be identical to the transmission quality. If the receiver cannot make out the high and low levels then the picture will be completely lost. There is almost no situation where the image will be noisy - it's either good or non existant.

So, although compressed digital signals are rarely as good picture quality as the analogue equivalent, it is far more likely that the received quality will be better by the time it reaches a television.

It is worth mentioning that many modern digital televisions have image processors that enhance images so that they appear sharper or richer than they are. The viewer perceives many of the enhancements as better quality even though they do not technically improve resolution or colour depth. The older analogue televisions rarely have image enhancement and can appear softer as a result.

Finally, analogue televisions tend to be tube based rather than plasma or LCD and are likely to be several years old. Tubes age and after a number of years can produce soft and washed out images. Compared to LCD or plasma, they can look very poor quality.

If you have a digital tv and an outdoor antennae do you need a converter box?

In the US the answer is probably not. Digital and analog TV broadcasts use the same frequencies and antennas. Digital TV is more fussy about signal quality than the older analog signals. So if you get marginal analog reception, figure on getting a new antenna for digital. The idea that there are special HDTV antennas is just marketing hype. Any antenna that gives you better digtial reception will also give you better digital reception.

Will a set top box improve signal quality for your TV?

Set top box is basically used to convert the digital signals broadcasted by digital signal broadcasters to analog signals, in case you wish to have your analog tv, but would like to have an access to digital channels. Digital channels definitely have better quality signals than analog and therefore you will have a better picture quality and signal quality even though you have converted the digital signals to analog.

What is the basic principle of digital television?

Digital television is simply the process of broadcasting a digital signal, instead of an analog one. This results in better sound and picture quality, as well as increased coverage.

Why are some converter boxes some cheap some expensive?

A Digital Television (DTV) Converter Box is an electronic device that converts the new free over-the-air digital signal into an analog signal viewable on older "analog" television set. The digital to analog converter box connects your antenna or rabbit ears to your TV set. It will allow you to continue watching TV after February 17, 2009, the day the transition to "all digital" takes place. A digital to analog converter box will not give you a digital picture on an analog TV set. Analog TV sets using the set top boxes will show digital broadcasts, but not in the full picture quality of digital TV. However, your picture will be better than it was with the old analog signal. Technically speaking about picture quality: The reason the picture quality won't be as good on an analog TV set is because of the display resolution. Analog TV screens aren't designed to display the same level of picture quality and resolution that is found in the digital TV signal.

Why did you have to change to digital TV?

The move to digital television broadcasting reflects the change in production, storage and viewing of television content. Digital transmission adds features that analog services are unable to support and there is a flexibility in the use of transmission bandwidth that is also not possible with analog broadcasts. As far as the viewer is concerned, digital television broadcasts allow far more channels to be received and normally with better image quality than seen with analog.

What does the digital TV switch involve?

It is not illegal not to switch. It's just if everybody else are switched to digital, you don't have anything to watch. Basically it used to be analog signal masts were sending out to your TV, nowadays it's (mainly) digital as it guarantees better quality. Soon you'll don't get analog signal anymore, so to watch TV you have to be digital.

How do you know if your TV is digital or analog?

"Standard-definition" (meaning 480i) Cathode-ray tube televisions are analog. CRT TV's are easily identifiable by their immense weight and the fact that their depth nearly matches their width and height. Newer, hi-def (720p, 1080i/p) televisions are almost all either lcd, plasma, or dlp, all of which are digital. for digital TV monitor shouldnot be of CRT.

What are the benefits of going digital rather than analog?

The benefits of going digital are you get better customer service, you get more out of your money, you don't have to research online what to buy, you have better quality television, and you don't have to repair your own TV.

What is the Difference between HDTV and regular tv?

The difference between digital cable TV and regular cable TV is the quality of the video stream that is being presented on the TV screen. A digital cable will provide a better quality picture, usually with a larger framerate and bitrate and as such these will look better on a larger TV.

Why digital signal is better than analog signal?

the digital code is binar. so if you get a signal it is absolut. analogue signals can be interfered or altered through interferation.

With digital adapter only get some stations why?

DTV sometime needs a better antenna than the old analog TVs. A few stations did not switch to DTV and are still Analog like LPTV which is Low Power TV.

How do you get HD signal on analong TV?

With a converter for digital to analog, cost about $40. from Walmart, RadioShack, etc. The cheap ones all produce poor pictures but I have one from KWORLD brand that puts out a better picture, component outputs but it is almost impossible to operate.
