Lead dogs are dogs that are both smart enough to pick up a bunch of commands but also has to be a very trustworthy dog. They need to be able to find the trail in even the worst conditions, and they dictate how fast the team goes. Swing dogs need to know most, if not all, of the lead commands for they have to guide the team around corners and typically act as the leader's temporary replacements should the leader get tired.
The middle dogs (or team dogs), don't typically need to know commands, they just need to be trusted not to try and run off course to chase squirrels. Team dogs are only there to add horse power. Wheel dogs always get the heaviest weight to pull and are typically the biggest on the team. They need to be calm and can't be easily startled.
Why the individual musher chooses their dogs varies depending on their individual team.
Because they want the dog to speed up.
All the sledders in my area say no less then 5-6"
Skeleton is dangerous for a variety of reasons. First, the sleds that skeleton sliders use lack brakes and steering. The sliders have to use their own body weight to help steer and their own feel to brake. Secondly, when sliding down a track, sledders can reach high speeds. The faster they are going, the more difficult it is for for the sledder to try to control his or her momentum and speed. Finally, in competitive skeleton, the conditions of the track itself can deteriorate as more and more slide down the course. This puts sledders that are near the end of the running order face a disadvantage and more potentially dangerous elements.
