Has to do with the genetic makeup of the dogs, if you breed brother- sister, mom- son, daughter- father, whatever "bad traits they carry with be double fold, bad teeth, bad tail set, bad conformation, all would be super concentrated in the resulting pups, only experienced breeders, that have no problem in culling ( removing pups from a breeding gene pool by either putting down or spay/neuter) should attempt these types of breeding's. There are safe ways of breeding to be able to carry on specific desired characteristics, you need to do your research by buying books and reading about breeding before you start breeding your dogs.

Dogs have lots of puppies because they have evolved to do so. Survival rate of puppies is not as high as other animals, and they do not invest as much time in each puppies as other animals. So, to continue the species dogs must have a large number of puppies.

How many dogs are in the litter?

This depends on the breed, weight, size, health and number of litters the dog has had. Bigger dogs will usually have larger litters, meaning that dogs such as Great Danes can have very large litters (the record for a Great Dane is 19 puppies in one litter). Smaller breeds have been known to have litters of only one or two puppies. Usually if it is a Dog's first litter then there will be less puppies than if she had had puppies before.
