Actually a dog wags their tail in different ways. If a dog keeps their tail high and wags it, they are showing a sign of dominance. The bigger dog usually does this because they think they are in control! If a dog only wags the tip of it's tail it means that it's unsure and/or nervous. The most popular type of tail wagging is when a dog wags his tail straight out, this means they are excited and happy about something.
It's a sign of happiness.
Dogs also wag their tails to show a sign of warning. They appear to be friendly but they are truly terrified. Take it from me I was bit by one of those friendly but terrified dogs.
As a way to communicate. Like how some people use hand gestures when they talk, dogs wag their tails to express themselves!
either they are excited (if it's wagging fast and freely) or they're warning you to back off/ they are scared (if it's small and still wags)

If the dog is wagging it's tail than it's probably happy. But dogs don't always wag their tails because they are happy. I think its just a sign of communication. Sometimes aggressive dogs will wag their tails. I don't know whether is subconscious or not - but I certainly believe it to be a way of communicating.

Dogs wag their tails. Tails could sometimes tell the dog's emotion. When dogs wag their tail it means that the dog is happy and want to play. When the dog's tail is not waging but it is down by their back legs means they are sad or scared.
Foxes do not wag their tails except for a small population resulting from a breeding experiment in Russia. Other than that tail wagging is unique to domestic dogs.
