Shortest routes follow great circles. Even if it looks on a map that straight over the Atlantic Ocean is the shortest route it isn't so. Try looking at it on a globe and see for yourself.
Air travel between America and Europe also try to follow the high altitude jet streams so the flightpath can change from day to day.

Iceland has invested money into research in these fields because it's much cheaper for them to use this energy instead of importing fossil fuel.
