Usually, when you go to a picture framing store to design a frame for your artwork, your framer will recommend ultraviolet filtering glazing to protect the art from fading caused by light.

All framers have seen the effects of light on their client's artwork. Usually, fading happens over years, so the effects are not apparent until you compare the art to an original version. Works on paper are much more susceptible to fading than are oil paintings. That is due to the heavy pigment load in paint, while printing inks need to be more fluid and consist of lighter pigments and dyes that can be forced onto a thin piece of paper.

So for preserving your artwork for a long period of time framers recommend you to apply UV filtering glazing.

Is custom picture framing business dying?

There are a number of misconceptions this is just one of them! The industry is thriving, whats missing is experienced picture framers. The fact is that not all framers know what they are doing. Framers aren't required to demonstrate capability before they open a frame shop. As in any industry, materials and techniques are improved on a regular basis and at a rapid pace. Some framers are not adequately trained, or do not keep up with the changes and can do harm that won't be seen until the art is reframed sometime in the future. The biggest misconception is probably that it is expensive. Big Box chain framers have coupons at 50% off and more on a regular basis. This gives consumers the idea that custom framing at an independent store will cost twice what it does at these large chains. In reality, when like to like is compared, independent stores usually beat the Big Box 50% off sales with everyday prices.

How much do framers make a year?

The first answer was good, except the question was how much does a framer make, not farmer. As a picture framer, I can attest that the average wage for a framer is anywhere between 9 and 15 dollars an hour, which extrapolates to between 18 and 33 grand a year. The industry is largely populated by small business owners who run their own shops, and among this people, profits can vary greatly. Generally speaking though, picture framing is not a lucrative business.
