Most gay people don't specifically want to be identified by their sexual orientation. It is a misconception. What they want is equality, freedom, and safety. They want to be able to talk about their romantic interests, just as straight people do. In short, they want exactly what straight people take for granted.
Also, being "open" doesn't mean "being open about sex". What they are open about is not about sex itself. It's about who they date and marry, and how they express themselves.
