There are different reasons and it varies by the individual. Not all girls like jerks, but it all comes down to confidence, and jerks are full of it. But it shouldn't take long for the girl to realize that jerks are overconfident and egotistical.
Most girls will admit that they do not like jerks. Its actually an illusion that girls like jerks. Instead, the jerk knows how to get the girl, which will make it seem like she actually likes him.
So instead of asking why girls like jerks, the more realistic question would be: What does a jerk do to get a girl? As mentioned before, he has confidence in himself and therefore can approach women without fear. He is up front about what he wants and doesn't censor himself. Girls are instinctively attracted to the alpha-male, and the jerk does all he can to display those characteristics.
The major weakness of the jerk is he can never keep a girl. Most of his relationships will be short-lived due to his character, and most girls will grow tired of "jerk behavior." The only reason she will stay in a relationship with a jerk is if she has low self-esteem and just wants to be with anyone, or if she is really dumb. A girl never truly likes a jerk, but instead are caught in their trap.

Okay... I'm a girl and I absolutely HATE jerks. So certain girls like jerks and certain girls don't. My advice for you is: Don't change your personality for a girl. It's so wrong. Yea, we'll like it you're changing everything for us but don't be someone you're not. I love nice guys! I absolutely LOVE 'em. Cause usually they care about other girls... that's basically all I have to say. Just be yourself. The right girl will come along who absolutely LOVES your personality! Trust me.
