Heavy drinking is associated with malnutrition because when you are drinking heavily, your body binges on the alcohol. After a little while, you don't eat, you constantly drink and your body lacks the nutrients that it needs everyday to function properly.

Apart from this, alcohol is high in nutritionally void energy, the intake of calories from drinking alcohol means less intake of calories which are nutritionally rich, such as the calories from food. Not only is calorie intake affected, but how the body metabolises the calories from food is also affected which can eventually lead to damage of the body's organs, in particular, the liver. Intake of certain vitamins and minerals becomes difficult for certain organs, such as the liver and intestines, which in turn affects how other organs work leading to deterioration of all bodily organs. As these organs struggle to cope with alcohol intake and the deterioration of the body's ability to absorb nutrients, the person becomes malnourished.
