Due to the way ocean currents circulate the western part of an ocean basin is generally warmer than the eastern portion. Hurricanes need warm water to form. Florida, bordering the western Atlantic Ocean, is surrounded by the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, and Gulf Stream. Such warm waters easily support hurricane formation.
By contrast California, on the eastern shore of the Pacific, is bordered by the Alaska Current. This cold ocean current hinders the convection that is necessary for hurricane formation.

The British Isles are a geographical feature and not a political entity so I'm not sure what challenges they could have. No tsunamis, no earthquakes, no hurricanes, no volcanoes, but it can be a bit miserable in winter.
