Hybrids still use an internal combustion engine, so it still use fossil fuels.
The advantage of a hybrid is that engine also charges a battery. The electric motors are then used when the engine would be at it's most inefficient or to boost the power when accelerating.
Hybrids also use regenerative braking. The motors are used in reverse to charge the battery when braking.
So basically, hybrids just mop up some of the weak points of an internal combustion engine and make the best use of waste energy.
The gas mileage is not that good, compared to a modern diesel engine, driven properly. The technology in a hybrid is hugely expensive and uses vast amounts of fossil fuel to make.
