Other than the fact married people are married in a church or Justice of the Peace a common-law marriage is considered a marriage after a certain amount of time depending on the State they live in. In Canada it is living together for six months so there is no difference when men cheat on their wives or if they are in a common-law relationship. Men can cheat for various reasons:

  • They become bored in their relationship.
  • The couple is not getting along well together and may be having problems with their sex life.
  • Men can rush into relationships thinking they love the person at the time and realize later that they do not love that person.
  • He may have chosen to live with his mate if she were pregnant and once they had their child or had more children he may feel penned in.
  • Some men simply like more than one woman in their life.
  • Some men never mature and find it difficult to commit to a relationship.

There is no excuse for cheating. It's immature; selfish and hurtful to the other partner. If a person is unhappy in their relationship they should be honest and break up.

What are the weaknesses of a common law relationship?

The most troublesome weakness of common law relationships, or more often called common law marriages, is the lack of legal rights. Common law marriage is not legally recognized in most jurisdictions. That means the partners do not have any of the legal rights associated with a legal marriage, especially property rights and rights of inheritance. Even in the few states in the United States that recognize common law marriage, the rights do not always reach the level of legal rights acquired by a a legal marriage.
