Mormon adults who have participated in a sacred ceremony called the "Endowment" wear special underwear. The Endowment may be viewed as a sort of step beyond baptism, in which one makes covenants with God to demonstrate their commitment to Him. The underwear, or "temple garment", is meant to be a personal reminder of the covenants made with God during the ceremony. It is similar to the way that a Christian might wear a cross necklace to remind them of their personal commitment to Jesus, or how a Catholic nun might wear simple modest robes to remind them of the vows they have made. The Mormon temple garment is modeled after the "linen breeches" and "linen coats" mentioned in the Old Testament, worn by the priests of the temple following their annointing. (see Exodus 28:42; Exodus 39:27-28; Leviticus 6:10; Leviticus 16:4; Ezekiel 44:17-19)
The Church has made an informative video and short article about the temple garment, including images of the garments, available at www.mormonnewsroom.org/article/temple-garments.
