1)Dry p-trap:-If the smell coming from one of your drains that might be from

2)Sewer line issues:-If the smell is from sink in the whole house that might be from sewer line of waste water that might be broken or blocked or making gurgling issues.

3)Venting:-Like p-trap another method to prevent sewer gas in house these pipes .These pipes may be clogged as they remove back-flowing sewer gases and run them up to the roof of the house.

Why do your pipes smell like rotten eggs when you turn on the shower?

Much of the time it is because of well water and the "hard" qualities of well water such as rust / lime etc... Sometimes turning on the hot water first and letting it run through pipes then turning it off and turning the cold water on helps. If that doesn't work, you may need to clean or replace the pipes, depending on how old they are.

Why would the hot and cold water smell of rust after having a new septic system installed?

The two systems should not be connected. Could the construction have shaken the pipes and knocked the rust loose? (Assuming that you have galvanized steel pipes). If that is the case, run the water until it is clear. Turn the water heater off, and drain the tank and refill after you have cleared the pipes.

Do water pipes in homes expand and contract?

Well if water is too cold, pipes will contract and if water is too hot, the pipes will expand.

What is the purpose of a vent pipe in a plumbing. System?

Vent pipes are a vital part of a Plumbing system. Most importantly it cancels out any siphon or vacuum caused by the moving water. If you look under your kitchen sink you will see that it has a bend in a U shape or a P/d shape if you tilt your head, this is a trap. What a trap does is when you turn your water on it drains water but when you shut your water off it keeps some of the water to act as a barrier between the air (Smell) in the drainage system and your house. Vacuums in the system from improper venting can suck the water right out of your traps causing a bad smell and loud and noisy drain pipes. Vent pipes usually come out of most homes as well by roof and keeps all the sewer smell circulating out of the building.

At what temperature do pipes crack?

Water pipes should not of themselves crack at any temperature, however if pipes have water in them the water will freeze at temperatures below 0oC. If this happens then as the water freezes it will expand (ice is less dense than water) and as it expands it will either stretch metal pipes until they burst or crack ceramic pipes. For this reason external water pipes are buried at a depth to which the frost will not penetrate and internal water pipes are lagged to keep them warm.
