Being called names cuts right down into the very core of our being. It causes us to doubt ourselves and our abilities. However harmless they might sometimes seem, calling someone names or teasing them is bullying, an often successful attempt to make someone else feel worse. We might be feeling quite cherrful and confident about ourselves, but name-calling can destroy that feeling and make us depressed and unhappy, especially if it happen a lot.

It can be worse if our friends call us names, as it as well as ourselvescauses us to doubt them. We feel "can we trust them anymore?" "Do I really know them?" "Do they really know me?"

When someone calls us names, we have our expectations dashed. We expected them to behave in a certain way, and they have behaved quite differenly, hurting us. Having your expectations let down is a very hurtful thing.
