people are just tempted to believe things like that

Excerpted from; "Why People Believe Weird Things.""More than any other, the reason people believe weird things," says Shermer, "is because they want to. . . .It feels good. It is comforting. It is consoling." Secondly, weird beliefs offer "immediate gratification." People like weird beliefs because they are simple. Weird beliefs also satisfy the quest for significance: they satisfy our moral needs and our desire that life be meaningful. Finally, he says, people believe weird things because weird things give them hope.

People may believe in superstitions because of family culture, personal beliefs, or simply because the people around them do. It's not necessarily wrong to believe in superstitions, but people may tend to let them take over their lives. When superstitious stuff happens, it sometimes can be purely coincidental.

because people need something to make themselves feel needed or wanted or that they are not alone , some people that scares because we are the only ones here and we have no clue were we came from. we also believe because we have faith!!! :D * When people do not understand something they start wondering about it and come up with possible explanations. When one of these explanations is plausible, more and more people accept it and after a while people 'believe' that that's the explanation.

In ancient times people didn't understand where the stars came from and why it was dark at night. Then someone suggested that a huge blanket was drawn before the sun at night and that was the reason it was dark, also the blanket had little holes in it through which some light still came through. These tiny spots of light were the stars. In ancient times this was a 'believe'.

In modern times we still don't understand how everything came to be. People have wondered about this a lot and came up with a god. This can be seen in many believes (religions). One of the reasons this explanation is accepted so widely, is the fact that it both comforts and frightens you;

If you are a believer It comforts you in a sense that there's someone watching over you and who will take care of you even after death.

If you are a non-believer It frightens you cause what if the believers are right and you didn't follow their rules .... you'll go to hell !!

As the group of believers grows it becomes easier to accept the believe as people like to 'fit in' and belong to a group of equal minded.

And last but certainly not least, if you're brought up in a religious environment and the 'believe' has been tought since your youngest days, then it's very hard to question such a believe and all the easier to accept it as truth.
