For many people, there is no confusion. The "stars and bars", the flag based on the Cross of St. Andrew, became the Confederate battle flag, is the most recognizable symbol of not only the confederacy, but also of the segregation laws that followed for almost 100 years. A flag is a symbol -- it represents something, it stands not for a place, but for a philosophy, a way of life. Many people, when they see the "confederate flag", they do not see the history of the South -- the flag symbolizes for them the oppression, discrimination, cruelty, that is also part of the history of that flag.
In 1865, one of General Lee's last orders was, "furl the flag, boys". Over 150 years later, those who would pay homage to what Robert E. Lee honored, refuse to recognize what Gen. Lee meant -- put that flag away, we are one nation again, and we all owe allegiance to one flag only, that of the United States.
It might be that the Confederate flag is a symbol of a war that consumed 650,000 lives, and a symbol of the government whose position was slavery everywhere, slavery forever. It might be that the Confederate flag is preferred today by white supremacists and segregationists. Or it might just be that black people have a strong patriotic preference for the lawful flag of the United States.
Now there are no confederate states but there are some people who still have confederate beliefs.
The South, who later became the Confederacy. The entire slavery issue was the result of the failure to deal with it in a manner that could make it an issue for the American people. Many Southerners were not in favor of slavery. Most Northerners didn't care, except for the expansion of it to the West.
it confuse people
so many people tried to stop slavery like the north but the people in the south didnt want slavery to end so it then took them 200 years for the slavery to finnaly end
It was one of the Confederate States - a slave state - and they felt slavery was okay.
No. Do not confuse ancient slavery, Roman or any other people's, with American slavery. Race had nothing whatsoever to do with ancient slavery. Ancient slavery was determined by birth not by skin color. Some people were born slaves while others, although freeborn, happened to live in a town that was enslaved such as Carthage or Alesia. The earliest civilizations, such as ancient Egypt had slave labor. Most were captured in wars.
The confederate flag is considered to be racist by some people because it represented the south in the civil war, and one of the most memorable issues of that war was that of slavery. The south used black slaves and were defending slavery because their economy was almost solely based on agriculture and they believed they needed slaves to work on the plantations. As a result, the confederate flag is now associated with the support of slavery and the subjugation of African Americans.
Because a lot of people still think that the confederacy centered around slavery and racial opression so a symbol of it offends such people.

Most people in the South that were in the Confederate army were fighting for an independent Southern nation. The rank and file soldier was not fighting for the preservation of slavery.
This is a paradox, and it was meant to confuse people for amongst and within have the same meaning, with evil and good being there just to distract you.
Since the confederacy was cool with slavery, many people consider it a symbol of racism these days
The Confederate Flag does not symbolize slavery. Yes that was one reason why the South secede from the Union but the biggest deal was the South was being taxed high on there cotton by Lincoln so in doing so they secede, Slavery was around before the Confederate States of America was even set up. The flag does NOT symbolize Slavery it Symbolize a group of people who had the guts to stand up for themselves and withdraw from the union with out any war ,but that did not set well with Lincoln. ~ ~ ~ The above is the answer given by people who are supporters of slavery and of the southern states' secession. The southern states secession forced the war on Our nation in order to free the human beings who were being treated worse than dogs by greedy, wealthy, murderous plantation owners. There IS no excuse for slavery. Nor is there any excuse for the ignorance that prevails in the confederate wanna-be types to this very day in America. Antebellum homes = slave owners residences = evil that was done within
There is no real meaning behind slavery than the obvious, that people have always enjoyed not having to do their own work. Slavery has been justified in a variety of ways from biblical times until now, the most common of these has been that slavery was accepted until fairly recently in history as an acceptable way to deal with the defeated after a battle.
Most people do not.
That is debatable, but I have noticed on several occasions that people seem to confuse Betsy Ross and Dolly Madison.
