An electric car is like a Radio Controlled toy car in that it uses a battery and an electric motor. An electric car might also be compared to an elevator that uses an electric motor to move people in an efficient and pollution free way. (ignoring that the power has to be made somewhere, somehow.) Older electric cars had simple technology, like an RC toy car, but modern electric cars use electronic motors that wouldn't even work without the electronics.
How do you recharge an electric car if you live in an apartment?
The lack of a place to plug in an electric car battery, for people who live in apartment buildings, or those who drive farther than a round trip to their home and garage (with outlet), is one of the big problems with electric cars. Unless there are places to plug in an electric car and recharge the batteries (much like the gas stations found throughout the world), electric cars will not have much of an impact. There needs to be a great many recharging places built, where people who buy an electric car can recharge their car's batteries, or the electric car will never be a big seller. It is probably true that the average person only drives about 50 miles a day, shopping, going to school, and/or commuting. It is also true that without a lot of recharging stations, people will not buy an electric car if the only place they can recharge the battery is at their house with an electric outlet they can plug into. The lack of recharging stations for the average person to plug their electric car into could bring an end to any hope that the electric car can wean the USA (or other countries) from imported fossil fuel energy.

Go to the site I linked below, and click on the electric box. It shows all the places where a person can recharge their car if they have an electric or electric hybrid. If there is no place near you to recharge your electric car battery, (and you do not have a place at home or work to recharge the battery), you might want to think twice before getting an electric car. People did not switch from horses to gas powered cars, until there were gas stations near where they lived or worked.
