Because, up until about 70 years ago, people didn't have radio, television, or internet where everyone could hear the way each other speak and keep up with slang so all the different parts of the country couldn't keep ended up developing slight different tweaks in the way they speak. Somewhere along the way when people started moving to different parts of the country and sending their different teachers along with them, no one was there to correct the teachers or students when people started deviating from the original dialect and pronunciation. -Jeffrey
