I suppose the ideal answer is patriotism and making a contribution to fighting for an ideal for which one feels it is worth dying for. Others though may join because it's a job- a way to earn a living. Others because they like the image of the soldier hero and just don't believe they will be the one to be killed ie The 'it wont happen to me' brigade. After all, there are far more soldiers that survive their service than die during it. What they overlook is the chance of being seriously injured and handicapped for life- which, of course, may be far worse. As an ex regular serviceman myself, I realised that I would be a member of a fighting force, but the chances of dying seemed quite remote. These days, I'm not so sure and I would certainly not want my child putting their life on the line with the gung ho crowd running the various shows that we have going on at the moment. I mean the politicians, not so much the sevicemen at the front line. Anyway, I hope that is helpful and will st art the debate rolling.
Joining the military has evolved from the past, where you had individuals enlisting because they were getting in to trouble or had no where else to go, now in modern society individuals are enlisting for job stability, career experience, medical and dental insurance, college money, respect and service to country. Use the military as a stepping stone to your future not as a last resort because you found yourself in trouble or you can not find a job.
It is difficult, pay is little, you get told what to do and when and can't say no. You have to live in the barracks unless you are married and/or have children, and you need to keep your room a certain way and, ready for inspection, and you are not allowed to have certain items. You can't get out unless you have completed your contract, if the military goes to war you can't back out, they can ship you where they want, and they can legally treat you like trash.
There are a number of reasons including wages and conditions, training opportunities, patriotism and lack of alternative opportunities.
people join the military when they are at least 18 years and up and when you are a u.s. citizen people join the military when they are at least 18 years and up and when you are a u.s. citizen

As of 2011, gay people can freely join the US military and do not have to hide their orientation.
Why do people want to be in the military? Its what they want to do and love to do it. Not every one wants to sit in a cubicle every day some want to save people and they are willing to take the risk.
They should, since military school prepares you for the actual military.
As many that are qualified and want to join.
No. Go talk to a recruiter and tell them you want to take the asvab but you arent sure if you want to join yet.
It is not possible for anyone to force anyone else, even a relative, to join the military. The military will only take people who agree to go. If your son refuses, the military will not take him.

Ask a recruiter.
