After the Enlightenment (The Period between the Scientific Revolution and the Renaissance) ideas such as Universal Human Rights, Equality, and Individualism became more popular. The American and French Revolutions were based on these principles. After a while, it was thought that these views should apply to not only rich white Europeans, but to oppressed Colonies and Slaves too. Many people thought that slaves deserved to be treated like people instead of property and fought for Legislation to end slavery.

People also opposed slavery because after the Industrial Revolution, slave labor became insufficient and started to be replaced by Factory workers.
