More and more people were opposed to the war, and after the Têt offensive in '69, American people (and the whole world) believed US forces were "losing" the war, which actually was not true. In '73, Nixon decided to bring your boys back home, mainly because of the pressure from the opposition. Also, more than 50,000 American lives were lost... This is a short answer, history is much more subtle, maybe you should check out some books on the Vietnam War (as I did when i got interrested).
