I understand that, originally, receptacles had 'nipples' that locked into the holes in order to hold the plugs in place. Although I don't think this is still the case. Anyone else out there to confirm this?

Sides of block in casting holes. You should have 2-3 ea. side under manifolds. Look like copper plugs the size of a .50 cent piece.
There are drain and fill ports with plugs in them. The plugs have square holes that will fit a 1/2" socket driver.

To change spark plugs on a 1994 Toyota Camry, remove the black shafts. The spark plugs are down the four holes. Use a socket set with extension to reach the spark plugs. Replace old spark plugs with new ones.
on top of the engine there is a cover sheild. remove the cover by the four bolt. the plug boots will come with it, the spark plugs are down in the holes.
The spark plugs are beneath the cover marked Quad 4. This cover holds the ignition coils that spark the plugs. Remove the cover and you will be able to see the spark plug holes on the top.
