Elephants have big ears to go along with their big bodies. They also have big ears to here at long distances, scare away predators by flapping their ears, and of course to keep them cool. Elephants have very thick skin and one of their main habitats is in Africa, one of the hottest places on earth.
The elephant is a huge animal. For instance, The African elephant is 3.5 metres tall while the Asian elephant is a little shorter. Both have very big ears. This is because their ears serve many purposes.

For an elephant living in a jungle, the sense of hearing is very important. Its big ears are able to pick up sound waves from quite a distance and from different directions as well. Now the elephants mostly found in Africa and Asia live in very hot regions. That means it needs a shady cool place to take rest in the heat of sunny day. but like the other animals, the huge elephant can hardly lie down under the tree. So, nature has provided it with big ears which act as air-conditioners and help the animal to lose heat. The elephant also uses its ears to keep itself cool by flapping them int he breeze so that they serve as fans and help to control the body heat.
Elpahants have big ears because it helps them hear or sense other animal predators.

  • Small ears reduces heat loss.
  • It would appear that the species of bears that have the smallest ears are in the coldest climates and are more prone to fighting each other. Smaller ears are much less sensitive to cold and provide a smaller target in a fight. Although their ears are small, their hearing is still acute.
