Certain proteins, called histones, act as spools, which wind up small stretches of DNA. Other proteins (including other histones) stabilize and support these spools, making a complex network of DNA coils and proteins.

DNA and proteins called histones
The highly condensed forms of DNA (and proteins) are known as chromosomes.
Chromosomes are made of a single strand of DNA. There are also some proteins that are bound to this DNA in order to manage it and keep it coiled, these are also sometimes referred to as part of the chromosome.
A chromosome is a mix of tightly packed DNA and proteins.

DNA and proteins (such as histones).
By proteins called histones.
DNA and proteins are what a chromosome is mostly comprised of. The DNA serves as code and instructions for the organism, almost like a recipe.
the dna is inserted into the active sites of the proteins which causes it to for the chrosmosome.

Chromatin. The proteins are histones, used to organize and compact the DNA.
