It's natures way of protecting the eyes and ears from infection or injury during the birthing process. If the mother has any bacteria, fungal or viral infections in the vaginal area (and most do, especially back in the days of wild dogs/wolves) the germs will not get into the eyes. By the age of 10-14 days, they have enough antibodies from their mothers milk, to fight off most normal bacteria etc.

∙ 14y agoNo, not necessarily. Some dogs are born with blindness problems, however, all dogs should be born blind. A dog must have a problem if not blind when born.
